Le Volcan

Comment passer un merveilleux week end à La Réunion en 3 étapes:

-> 1ère étape: réserver une nuit au gite du volcan (à 3 minutes en voiture du point de vue sur le volcan, au milieu de nul part) et prévoir une marche de plusieurs heures à la plaine des sables.

-> 2ème étape: samedi, monter au volcan en passant par la Plaine des Palmistes, avec une vue splendide sur le Piton des Neiges (l'ancien volcan) et vue plongeante jusqu'à la mer.

How to spend a splendid weekend on the Reunion Island in 3 steps:


-> First step: reserve a night in the volcano guesthouse (at 3 minutes by car from the point of view on the volcano in the middle of nowhere) and plan a several hours walk on "La Plaine des Sables".


-> Step 2: saturday drive up to the Volcan, via "La Plaine des Palmistes", with a really nice view on the Piton des Neiges (the old vulcano) and a view going till the sea.

Arriver au volcan vers 11:00-12:00 dans un gros brouillard. Le volcan est caché derrière les nuages, et il pleut. Bon, on essaye d'attendre un peu dans la voiture que la pluie passe, on va prendre un café à la buvette du volcan, toujours rien. Pas de volcan. Direction le gîte qui était fermé à midi, pour cause de communion.

On a donc du attendre 15:00 pour pouvoir se mettre à l'abri et au chaud ...

Arrival at the volcano around 11:00-12:00 in a big fog. The volcano is hidden behind the clouds, and it's raining. So, we try to wait in the car that the rain stops, we go to take a coffee in the volcano snack, still nothing. No volcano to see. Direction the guesthouse which was closed over lunch, because they organised a party. So we had to wait 15:00, to be able to get our room and be dry and warm in the guesthouse.

Il a plu toute la soirée et toute la nuit, on s'est fait tremper en allant de la chambre au resto (15 marches à peine). Bon, espérons que demain il fera beau pour qu'on puisse aller marcher et qu'on ne soit pas monter pour rien.

It was raining all the evening and all night long. We've got wet only by walking from the room to the restaurant (around 15 steps). So we hope that the weather will be better tomorrow morning, so that we can go to walk and so that we did not drive up for nothing.

-> 3ème étape: Dimanche, petit déjeuner à 6:00 pour voir le lever de soleil sur le volcan. Malheureusement il fait froid et brumeux. Donc le volcan joue encore à cache-cache.

Après 30 minutes de réflexion dans la voiture, après avoir mis nos chaussures de marche, après avoir préparer les sacs à dos, après avoir été au départ du sentier et avoir renoncé à la marche prévu, car il fait trop froid (et oui, c'est possible, qu'à La Réunion il fasse froid, surtour à 2300 mètres).  Nous descendons donc un tout petit peu plus bas, et faisons la marche Plan B, qui semble assez dégagée pour le moment, profitons en.

C'était une très agréable marche, 1:30, plus ou moins plate, ce qui est très très rare ici; avec des paysages lunaires ou martiens, au choix. En plus, la brume se dissipe de plus en plus; donc il fait presque chaud.

-> Step 3: Sunday, breakfast at 6:00 in order to go to see the sun going up on the volcano. Sadly the weather is not really better than yesterday. It's still cold and foggy. So we still don't see the volcano.


After 30 minutes thinking in the car, after putting our walking shoes, after preparing the bags, after driving to the walking way we wanted to do and give up the walk, because it was to cold (Yes it can be too cold on La Réunion, especially at 2300 meter altitude). We go a little bit more down, to do the Plan B walk, which look out of the cloud for the moment.


It was a really nice 1:30 walk, more or less flat, which is rare here. The walk had a nice moon or mars landscape; you can choose. And the sun is more and more coming up, so it's almost hot. 

On remonte vite en voiture au volcan, car il a l'air dégagé. Et effectivement, en attendant un peu, la vue se dégage, et on peut apercevoir le sommet entre 2 nuages.

We drive quick back up to the volcano point of view, as we saw that the sky is opening a little bit. And after some minutes waiting, we can see the volcano between 2 clouds. 

En redescendant, on se fait un petit pique-nique, sur une des places encore libre car on est dimanche et le week end, le sport national ici, c'est le pique-nique familial. Et les places ne sont pas improvisées; et les familles réunionnaises n'apportent pas que des sandwichs comme nous, mais des casseroles, des carris, des tentes, etc, etc ...

Driving back down, we stopped to do a small picnic at one of the free places. It's sunday today, and here on the island, the national sport on the weekend is the picnic with all the familly. And the picnic places are not just like this, on a green place somewhere; they are fix built almost everywhere, and the familly don't take only sandwiches, like us, but they bring the pans, the carris, the tents and so on ....

Un dernier arrêt à Bois Court, pour vérifier que le monte-charge qui ravitaille le village tout au fond de la Vallée existe encore.

A last stop on the way at Bois Court, to verify that the ropeway for material, which is used to bring the supply to the village down in the valley.

Arrivés à notre nouvelle étape à la Plaine des Cafres. Bungalow perdu dans un jardin, très joli et tranquille. Finalement c'était un très bon week end.


Finally we arrive in our new guesthouse in "La Plaine des Cafres". It's a bungalow lost in the middle of a nice garden, nice and quiet. Finally it was a really good weekend.
