Voila, c'est définitivement la fin, nous sommes rentrés hier, les sacs remplis de belles images, de souvenirs et d'ananas. 

Résumé de nos vacances: 20 000 km en avion, 2400 km en voiture, à peu près 60 km à pied et beaucoup de dénivelé.

 

Après une longue nuit de sommeil c'est l'heure des lessives, du rangement etc ...

Demain c'est le retour au travail!

So it is definitly the end, we came back home yesterday with our luggage full of nice pictures, souvenirs and ananas.

Summary of our holidays: 20 000 km by plane, 2400 km by car, around 60 km by foot and  lot of meters going up ...

After a long night it's time for ordering, washing and so on ....

Tomorrow we should go back to work !

Et voila, l'heure de notre dernière randonnée est arrivée. Alors pour finir en beauté, nous avons fait notre plus longue randonnée de ces vacances: 15 km, 4-5 heures de marche + à peu près 1 heure de pause en tout. C'est une marche très sympa, sauf le début. En fait, dans tous les guides touristiques, cette marche est définie comme facile, car un des rares sentiers plats de l'ile, mais délicate pour les personnes sujettes au vertige. En fait, le vertige n'était pas un problème aujourd'hui et le sentier est effectivement plat. Le problème est que de la voiture stationnée en bord de route jusqu'au départ du sentier, il y a 45-60 minutes de grimpette, sur un sentier large et pas extrêmement pendu, il est vrai, mais presque tout le temps en plein soleil, et à la Réunion, à 9:00-10:00, il fait chaud en plein soleil, même pendant l'hiver!

Nous avons donc transpiré en montant et sur le sentier aussi, car il n'y a vraiment pas beaucoup d'ombre tout le long. La vue était grandiose sur les montagnes et le cirque de Mafate. Nous ne sommes pas allé jusqu'au premier ilet de Mafate, mais seulement jsuqu'à la cascade, qui était toute petite vu qu'il ne pleut pas beaucoup.


So the time came for our last walk. So to finish good our trip on Reunion Island we did today our longest walk of the month: 15 km, 4-5 hours walk + almost 1 hour break. It is a really nice walk, except the beginning. In fact in every Reunion Island book, this walk is designated as easy walk as it is one of the rare flat path, but perhaps difficult for people who have vertigo. So for the vertigo it was no problem and the path is really flat. The problem is that the way for the car parked beside the street and the beginning of the path, it is climbing during 45-60 minutes on a large path but almost all the time under the sun. And on the Reunion Island, around 9:00-10:00, it is extremly hot under the sun, even in winter!

We swet going up, but also on the flat path, as there is really not a lot of shadow on the way. The view was fantastic on the mountain and on Mafate. We did not walk till the first village of Mafate, but only till a mini Waterfall (it is not raining a lot for the moment.).

Après une pause sandwich, nous repartons dans le sens inverse pour retourner à la voiture. En cours de route, nous avons vu quelques papangues.


After a sandwich break we turned back and walked the same way back to the car. On the way we could see several papangue. 

De retour à notre bungalow, nous devons malheureusement commencer à faire nos bagages :(  C'est désespérant, 4 semaines c'est encore trop court. Il y a plein de choses que nous voulions faire et que l'on a pas fait! Martin et moi parlons déjà de la prochaine fois ...

Back to our bungalow we sadly started to pack our luggage :( Even 4 weeks are still not enough ! There are still a lot of things we wanted to do and we did not find the time for it. Martin and myself we are already speaking about the next time ...


Demain, petit tour au marché de Saint-Paul, pour faire le plein d'ananas, chouchoux et autre souvenirs et l'après-midi, dernier petit tour à Saint-Denis, avant de nous rendre à l'aéroport. Enfin 10 heures d'avion pour pouvoir reposer un peu nos jambes.

Tomorrow we will do a small turn on the market of Saint-Paul to get some ananas, chouchoux and other souvenir. In the afternoon we will do a last turn in Saint-Denis and then direction the airport: Finally 10 hours plane to relax a little bit our legs.

Aujourd'hui, c'est certainement notre dernier jour à la plage. Nous avons rendez-vous ce matin avec des gens de la réserve naturelle océanique. Ils organisent tous les mercredis et samedis une ballade sous-marine (avec masque, tuba et palmes) pour expliquer aux curieux comme nous les poissons, le corail et les gestes à faire ou à ne pas faire pour protéger tout ca. Nous avons donc fait une ballade d'une heure, la tête sous l'eau. Et nous avons appris à regarder où l'on pose nos palmes etc ... Très interessant.


Today it is probably our last day at the beach. We have a date this morning with people taking care of the oceanic nature protection area. They organise every wednesday and saturday a "underwater walk" (snorkeling with guide) to explain to the people who are curious like us the fishes, the corals, what we should do or not do to preserve the lagoon. We have done a one hour trip with the head under water. It was interesting, and we learned now to check where we can put our fins on the ground without destroying anything.

Cet après-midi, petite sieste sous les filaos et dernier petit tour dans l'eau.

At lunch we went to eat on the beach, really good.
This afternoon, short siesta under the filaos and last turn in the water.

Ce matin rendez-vous à 10:00 au port de Saint-Gilles pour un petit tour en bateau à la recherche des dauphins. Nous sommes sortis du port depuis 10 minutes à peu près lorsque nous croisons un groupe de dauphins, environ une centaine environ. Le bateau s'arrête pendant un long moment pour que l'on puisse les observer longuement.

This morning we have a date at 10:00 in the port of Saint-Gilles for a boat trip, searching the dolphins. Just 10 minutes after we started the trip, we met a group of around 100 dolphin.  The boat stopped so that we can enjoy them a long time. 

Sur le chemin du retour au port, le capitaine apercoit une baleine devant le bateau. Effectivement, nous avons le plaisir d'entrevoir la dorsale de la baleine. Malheureusement c'est une timide, elle ne se montre quasimment pas. Tant pis, nous l'aurons vu quand même.

On the way back to the port the captain saw in front of the boat a whale. And we really saw the back of one. It's a shy one, it stays more under water. But it does not mater, we could see it a little bit, it's enough. 

En rentrant au port, nous nous dirigeons vers le DCP pour déjeuner un bon poisson frais.


Coming back to the port we go to lunch a nice fresh fish in the DCP.

Cet après-midi nous restons à la plage de l'Ermitage pour observer les poissons sous l'eau. Aujourd'hui c'est la journée poissons: sur l'eau, sous l'eau et dans l'assiette.

This afternoon we stayed at the beach of Ermitage to observe fish under water.
Today it is the full fish day: over the water, under the water and in the plate.

Ce soir diner au bord de la plage, délicieux.

Ce matin, on part pour une marche de 2-3 heures sur le sentier des Ravenales (arbres du voyageur). Mes arbres, ah non ce ne sont pas de arbres mais des herbes, préférées. Quand on arrive au sentier, on voit qu'il y a 2 boucles, une courte et une longue, nous décidons de prendre la longue avec un détour par le point de vue qui se trouve sur la petite boucle. Malheureusement, le début de la marche est horrible, bon, j'exagère, pas horrible, mais pas très agréable, ca grimpe raide, ca glisse ...  Pendant que nous montons difficilement, il y a un réunionnais qui fait des allers-retours en courant; il doit s'entraîner pour la diagonale des fous.

Résultat, on part sur la petite boucle et nous ne ferons pas la grande. Résultat 1 heure de marche, très agréable dans la forêt avec quelques points de vue et de beaux arbres du voyageur.

This morning we go for a 2-3 hours walk on the Ravenale path (the traveller's tree path). These are my prefered trees, no, there are no trees but herbs. When we arrived at the beginning of the path, we found out that there are 2 turns: a small one and a longer one. We decide to do the long one with a small turn on the point of view which is on the short path. 
The bad news is that the beginning of the way is really hard: sliding, climbing ... During we hardly walk up, there is a guy from here running up and down. He is probably doing training for the "diagonale des fous", a famous race here, crossing the island with about 10000 meter altitude difference. 


So at the end we do only the short turn. So in a hour we are done, it was a nice walk in the forest, with some nice place to see the landscape and some nice traveller's trees.

Nous allons ensuite déjeuner au QG à la Plaine des Cafres et je fais l'expérience du mois, je prends un carri coq pour essayer. Le coq c'est très bon, jusuq'à ce qu'on arrive au morceaux de pattes, ongles, et autres parties reconnaissables de l'animal ... Ames sensibles s'abstenir. Bon c'est pas grave, le reste suffit amplement à me remplir l'estomac.

We go to lunch by the QG at "La Plaine des Cafres" and I did a funny experience. I tried for once the carri cock. The meat is good till I arrive to the foot, head and other recognisable piece of the animal ... Sensitiv people should not watch that ... Anyway I was not hungry anymore.

L'après-midi nous décidons de prendre la route forestière du Tévelave pour nous rendre à l'observatoire des papangues, peut-être que la bas nous aurons plus de chances avec nos photos. Bon, ils ont rasé une partie de la forêt pour replanter des plantes d'ici. Résultat pas vraiment de papangues dans les environs. On en a vu quelques uns au loin et un pas trop loin mais les photos, c'est toujours pas ca. La route est quand même sympa et la vue est très bien aussi. Nous n'avons donc pas perdu notre journée.

In the afternoon we take the forest street in the Tevelave forest to go to the Papangue place, perhaps we will have better chance for our pictures. But when we arrived we found out that they cut a big part of the forest around the place to observe the birds, in order to replant trees from here. So not a lot of birds here around. We saw some far away and one closer, but the pictures are still not better.  But the street was nice to drive and the view is also nice. We had a again a good day today.

Aujourd'hui, on a rendez-vous à 9:00 à un rond point, où l'on doit retrouver le responsable de l'association VIT pour une randonnées aux Makes. Il a dit que c'était un sentier facile.

On se retrouve au départ du sentier avec une autre association et du coup une trentaine de personnes, prêts à partir à la découverte du Bois de Bon Accueil.  L'ambiance est sympa, il y a des touristes et des locaux. On part sur un sentier marmaille, qui se transforme en sentier qui grimpe. Le guide explique les différents arbres et parmi les marcheurs, il y a un ancien de l'ONF à qui l'on peut poser des questions, et qui est très intéressant.

Martin fait la grande boucle jusqu'au point de vue, moi, mes genoux n'arrivent plus à suivre, je prends donc avec d'autres le raccourci.

Today we have a date at 9:00 by a roundabout where we should meet the owner of the VIT group in order to go to walk together in "Les Makes". He said that it is an easy, easy path.


We meet an other group, so that we are around 30 people, and then we are ready for the walk in the forest of "Bon Accueil". The people are nice and gentle, some are in holidays like us, other are living on the island. We start on a path "Marmaille" (for children), and then it change to a path climbing. The guide is explaining the different trees on the way, and within the group, there is somebody who was working earlier for the ONF (National organisation for the forest). We can nicely speak and ask questions to this person; it's really interesting. 


Martin goes for the big turn, with the point of view; me, my knies are not so good today, so I take the shortcut with some other persons. 

A midi nous nous arrêtons à L'Etang-salé pour déjeuner et ensuite après un petit passage à la chambre pour nous changer, nous partons découvrir le carnaval réunionnais.

Premier challenge: trouver une place de parking ... On fait comme tout le monde ici, on se gare n'importe où, du moment qu'il y a assez de place pour ne pas trop gêner la circulation: qui sur les rond-points, sur les trottoirs, le long de la route, etc ... Ensuite, c'est plus facile, il y a des navettes gratuites organisées par la ville de Saint-Gilles qui nous emmènent jusqu'à l'entrée de la ville. Ensuite, il faut tout descendre à pied. Au début on pensait être arrivés trop tard, car il n'y avait pas trop de monde, puis après un virage, on apercoit, les chars, la foule et on entend la musique. Les journaux disent qu'il y avait entre 10 et 15 000 personnes. Je confirme, il était difficile d'avancer.

At lunch we stopped in L'Etang-Salé for lunch and then after bringing back the walking clothes to the room, we go to see the carnaval from Saint-Gilles.


The first challenge is to find a parking place... So we do like everybody here, we park somewhere, as long as there is enough place on the street to let one car through: some are parked on the roundabout, on the sidewalk or along  the street. Once the car parked it's easier, the city organised some bus for free which are bringing us till the entry of the city; the rest is to be done by foot.  First we thought, that we are a little bit too late, because there were not a lot of people and we heard almost nothing. But after a curve, we saw the people, we heard the music. The newspaper here wrote that there were between 10 and 15 000 persons. I believe so, as it was difficult to go forwards.  

Vu qu'on s'était renseignés avant, nous nous rendons plus ou moins directement à la plage des Roches noires, où le Roi Dodo sera brûlé ce soir. Vu que nous ne sommes plus tout jeune, (les jeunes s'installent sur la plage avec bières et cigarettes), nous nous installons à la terasse d'un restaurant que nous connaissons bien et qui est directement en face de la place où aura lieu le bûcher. En attendant le Roi Dodo, nous pouvons dinner tranquilles. Ils mettent longtemps à l'installer ce Roi Dodo, mais le moment arrive enfin, où il lui mette le feu.

La rue où se trouve le restaurant et la place est pleine à craquer et beaucoup sont déguisés, prêts à faire la fête. Une fois le bûcher et notre dinner terminés, nous retournons à pieds jusqu'à la navetter et ensuite à notre chambre.  C'était encore une bonne journée qui annonce malheureusement la début de notre dernière semaine ici.

As we are alomost living here and we get the right informations, we knew that the important part of the party will be on the beach of Roches Noires, where they will burn the King Dodo. As we are not so young anymore (the young ones are going on the beach, with biers and cigarettes), we go to sit down by a restaurant which is just in front of the place where the King Dodo will arrive. So during we were awaiting him, we could nicely take diner. They took a long time to place him on his last place, but finally they put him there on fire. 


The street where the restaurant and the King Dodo are, is full of people, some are disguised, and all are ready for party. Once the fire and our diner finished, we walked back to the bus and then to our room. It was a good day, but sadly this good day is also the beginning of our last week here.
